January 2025 - Winter Learning at Tiny Hoppers Richmond East

January 16, 2025

At Tiny Hoppers Richmond East, exploring a winter theme in the classroom offers opportunities for children to connect real life experiences to learning in a classroom. From learning about different types of weather, to the layers of clothes we wear, winter brings an abundance of connections through learning explorations and real life!

Through winter activities, children can engage in curriculum in multiple ways! Children can begin to recognize letters in winter words like snowman and ice, they can count snowflakes during circle time, participate in sensory play by touching and feeling different textures like kinetic “snow” or icy water in sensory bins, and they can have science discussions — such as how snow forms in clouds and falls as flakes.

Many animals are more popular in the cold winter months too! Children can learn about animals like polar bears, penguins, and snowy owls. Through books and other resources, children can explore what these creatures eat, how they stay warm, and where they live. Some classes explored hibernation, different natural environments, and how animals make footprints in the snow.

Winter is a great way to introduce new art materials and concepts to each age group. Children can make paper snowflakes, make art with puffy paint, and create their own snowman with a variety of materials. These activities not only engage fine motor skills but give children an opportunity to explore colours and textures.

Our classes have the opportunity to go for weekly walks in the community and can explore the winter nature. Even in colder temperatures, children can look for signs of winter everywhere. Children and teachers can notice how some trees lose their leaves, how birds migrate south, and how ice forms. A nature walk is a perfect way to connect children with the season.

A winter theme in the classroom is a wonderful way for children to learn about the season, discover new things, and engage in fun activities. Whether through stories, art activities, or outdoor exploration, winter offers so many opportunities for learning!
