Tiny Hoppers Richmond East was fortunate to have Mike’s Critters visit our Tykes classes this past August. The visit with Mike and his critters gave children the chance to meet and hold some charming animals, and also receive an educational experience! Mike took time to teach children about each species, how to care for them, and the importance of respecting animals.
During the visit, children got to meet a variety of species, including a snake, tarantula, lizard, turtle, and guinea pig. Mike asked the children questions and sparked conversation regarding topics such as “What does a snake eat?” And “How long does a turtle live for?”
Some children volunteered to pet or hold the animals, sharing a brief and special connection with them. They were taught how to be careful and kind with the animal, and some children excitedly got their photo taken with the critter!
Vancouver is known for homing a diverse variety of animals in the local parks, forest, lakes, and ocean. As children had this opportunity to interact with unusual critters, it sparked their curiosity in the classroom too! Children and teachers explored new curriculum with inspiration from our visit about animals from different environments. Even now, in a different season, children are noticing changes in their surroundings such as how squirrels are collecting food for winter, bees and butterflies are seen less often, and the classes are having conversations about what animals may or may not hibernate.
Thank you again to Mike’s Critters for visiting us in the summer, and for sparking our love and respect for animals!
