Where The Dancing Shadows Create Stories

Observation

Educators placed a sheet across the space and added a light source to shine over the animal figures. Children explored what would happen when they moved the animals closer to and further away from the light. They carefully held an animal figure in front of the light, adjusting the distance until the shadow became clear and visible on the sheet.


 

Connection to Learning

This experience offered endless opportunities for wondering and questioning as children explored light and shadow. Through the intentional selection of materials, children engaged in meaningful play that supported their understanding of shapes, size, and contrast. The light and shadow play encouraged children to recognize the outlines of animals and observe how shadows change depending on distance and positioning.

Children identified the animals through their shadows, using imagination to interpret the shapes they saw. This process supported visual perception, creativity, and early scientific thinking as simple figures transformed into shadow images.


 

Reflection

This experience could be extended through storytelling, where children create narratives based on the shadow animals they see. Providing opportunities for imaginative storytelling would further support creativity, language development, and collaborative play as children continue to explore and express their ideas through this activity.
