Welcoming March: New Beginnings and Colourful Celebrations at Tiny Hoppers Barrie

March 5, 2026
Sherrie Maclean

March is here, bringing longer days, the first whispers of spring, and some of the most joyful and meaningful celebrations of the year! At Tiny Hoppers Barrie, we’re embracing everything this incredible month has to offer β€” from muddy boots and budding trees to vibrant cultural traditions that remind us how beautifully diverse our world is.

Spring Is in the Air 🌱

After a cozy Barrie winter, watching children reconnect with the outdoors is truly magical. This month, we’re bringing learning outside whenever we can β€” spotting the first robin, noticing buds on the trees, and yes, jumping enthusiastically in puddles.

In our classrooms and beyond, children will be exploring:

  • Nature walks and outdoor discovery β€” observing the signs of seasonal change up close
  • Planting and growing β€” introducing little hands to seeds, soil, and the wonder of watching something grow
  • Sensory mud and water play β€” because messy play is meaningful play!
  • Spring-themed art and storytelling β€” from painted flowers to handprint butterflies

Holi – The Festival of Colours 🌈

On March 4th, we kick off the month with one of the world’s most joyful celebrations! Holi is a Hindu festival marking the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil β€” celebrated with an explosion of colour, music, and togetherness.

We’ll be bringing the spirit of Holi to life through:

  • Colour mixing experiments β€” exploring what happens when colours come together
  • Holi-inspired art β€” bold, bright, and beautifully messy creations
  • Storytime β€” sharing age-appropriate stories about the meaning and joy of the festival
  • Music and movement β€” celebrating with rhythm and dance just like families around the world

Nowruz – Persian New Year 🌸

On March 20th β€” the spring equinox β€” millions of people across Iran, Central Asia, and beyond will welcome Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Nowruz means “new day,” and what better way to mark the official arrival of spring than with a celebration rooted in renewal, hope, and fresh beginnings?

We’ll be exploring Nowruz with our children through:

  • The Haft-Sin table β€” learning about the seven symbolic items and what each one represents
  • Spring nature crafts β€” goldfish, flowers, and sprouts are all traditional Nowruz symbols
  • Conversations about new beginnings β€” a wonderful theme for young learners at any age

Eid al-Fitr – A Celebration of Gratitude and Togetherness πŸŒ™

Toward the end of March, we’ll also be honouring Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan β€” the Islamic holy month of fasting, reflection, and community. It’s a time of deep gratitude, generosity, and joyful celebration with family and friends.

We’ll be celebrating with our children by:

  • Exploring gratitude and giving β€” talking about what it means to be thankful and kind
  • Eid-inspired crafts β€” crescents, stars, and lanterns make for beautiful art projects
  • Learning greetings β€” children love learning to say “Eid Mubarak!”
  • Celebrating community β€” just as Eid brings families together, we’ll reflect on what makes our Tiny Hoppers family so special

Developmental Focus This Month

All of these celebrations tie beautifully into the skills we’re nurturing every day:

  • Curiosity and problem-solving through hands-on science and nature activities
  • Social-emotional learning β€” empathy, kindness, and appreciating others
  • Language and literacy with culturally rich books, songs, and conversations
  • Creative expression through art projects inspired by each celebration
  • Gross motor development as outdoor play ramps back up with the warmer weather
