In September, Tiny Hoppers Richmond East spent time learning about Terry Fox and the Terry Fox Walk. Across all six of our Squirts, Tots, and Tykes classes, the children explored the topic in ways that made sense for their age and interests. Our older children learned about Terry Fox, his journey, and the movement he started, while also talking about the ways we are different and the things we have in common. Our younger children explored the idea of walking by trying out different textures and surfaces with their feet. The learning happened both indoors and outdoors through art, movement, sensory play, and group activities.
The children had the chance to share ideas, work together, and talk about what community means to them while making banners and flags. A highlight was seeing the children take their learning outside of the centre, as every class went for a walk in the community with their banners and flags. This gave the children an opportunity to see how their learning can connect to the world around them!
As an emergent curriculum childcare centre, we value following the children’s interests and building learning experiences from there. This month gave us a wonderful opportunity to learn about Terry Fox while also learning about ourselves, each other, and the community we are part of.
