Bug Sensory Play

August 1, 2021

What is sensory play? -Picking things up and feeling their texture is what people often associate with sensory play, but it’s about much more than touch.  Sensory play includes any activity that stimulates a your senses of: touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing, as well as anything which engages movement and balance. From birth to early childhood, children use their five senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them.  Here we see our toddlers exploring in shredded paper searching for hidden bugs. A sensory bin is child driven. The children direct the play, imagines the situations, and determines the tasks. Sensory bins provide the most amazing opportunity for truly independent, uninterrupted play. The class was intrigued with bugs, so the teachers added bugs and bug nets and let the class explore.
