As our classes regularly do every month, teachers conduct fire drills so children know and get educated about fire safety. Our JK2 class in particular became very interested in becoming firefighters and what they do. This opened up an opportunity for teachers to expand the children’s learning by exploring all kinds of community helpers in our city.
The JK2 teachers used this opportunity to expand their learning by turning their drama centre into a Community Helper Centre. The children can pick and choose who they want to be for the day and explore the different roles and responsibilities of each community leader. This helps them learn about diverse professions, but also develop their social skills with adults and friends.
