This month, our squirts have embarked on a wonderful journey of discovery through our themed activities. During our “finding heart shapes” Valentines Day activity, our young ones gathered at the tuff tray in search for hidden heart shapes underneath a bunch of petals. L spotted a heart underneath the petals and gleefully raised it up with his hand and exclaimed, “heart!” The following week, we put away the materials we used for Valentines Day. But then, at our Family Day set up, L found the same heart shape somewhere in the room and showed it to us saying “heart” then he placed it at the center of the word family. Our squirts also named the members of the family saying, “daddy and mommy” while holding the multicultural family figurines. This simple act of holding and naming the family members through the figurines was a touching expression of love, reflecting the significance of the family celebration.
Later, as the classroom transformed for Ramadan, our squirts participated in the new decorations that symbolizes it. While pointing at the printed “moon” and “star” symbols, L says it. As we moved to the activity table with star shapes set up and played the “Twinkle Little Star” song R took one of the star shapes and showed to us while saying, “star”. When T did the same and said it too, even more our hearts leaped for joy.
Their participation in the month’s celebrations reflected not only their developing language skills but also their growing appreciation and care for the different cultures represented within our community, as they learned to show kindness and respect for each other’s traditions.
Dispositions for Learning
The children demonstrated remarkable curiosity as they explored new symbols and decorations. Their confidence was evident when they boldly named shapes, such as “heart,” “moon,” and “star,” showing a growing sense of self-assurance within the classroom environment. The children’s engagement was visible through their active participation and eagerness to explore, fostering deeper connections to the themed activities. Through their interactions, they displayed persistence—repeatedly seeking out and identifying shapes, even as the themes changed. Finally, the children’s learning journey was marked by how they care about the world as they shared discoveries about other cultures with peers and educators further supporting their language and social development.
Honoring Each Child’s Learning Journey
Our image of the child as a competent, capable learner shines brightly this month. Their ability to articulate new words reflects their inherent strengths and capacity for growth. By nurturing these dispositions, with their interest in shapes, we will be providing opportunities for hands-on exploration and meaningful conversations throughout the week. As our little ones continue to discover new words and connections, we are excited to nurture their curiosity and celebrate each milestone in their language journey.
