Our older class has shown strong enthusiasm for K-Pop Demon Hunters, and this interest has been thoughtfully extended into their learning experiences. Children have been role-playing characters from the show while continuing to practise hairstyling techniques on mannequin heads. To further support this fan-favourite play, educators invited a parent who specialises in hairdressing to visit the classroom and demonstrate bubble braids and colourful, sparkly updos.
Connection to Learning
This experience highlights the value of community involvement by encouraging families to share their professions and skills with the children. Through role play and creative expression, children continue to explore their interest in the themed movie and its characters, including Rumi. These activities support imaginative play, communication skills, and confidence as children bring their favourite characters to life.
Children have opportunities to imagine who they want to be as they grow up. Choosing a passion that excites them helps children understand that following their interests will never dull their sparkle, whether through fantasy, storytelling, or real-life experiences. These experiences support the image of the child as someone who can choose who they will become. Children are empowered to explore identities, interests, and possibilities, building confidence in their ability to shape their own future.
The focus of these experiences is to strengthen family partnerships within our program while inspiring children through real-world professions and passions. This visit showcased hairstyling as a creative art form, incorporating colour, sparkle, and braiding techniques. Children were encouraged to imagine, experiment, and express their ideas through hair design, fostering a sense of wonder and creativity.
Children’s curiosity and inquiry were evident as they asked questions and explored new techniques. As keen observers, children learn from both fantasy worlds and the significant people in their lives, drawing meaningful connections between imagined characters and real-world skills.
Reflection
This observation has shaped both current and future planned experiences, allowing children to continue exploring fantasy, storytelling, and imaginative play. By supporting children as they move between make-believe worlds and real-life experiences, we honour their creativity and their evolving understanding of the world around them. We will continue to share community opportunities to scaffold the children to never dull their sparkle.
