Today the children explored a construction themed invitation to play using toy construction vehicles, wooden blocks, traffic cones, loose parts, and sand. They eagerly scooped, pushed, and transported the sand with dump trucks and excavators while creating their own construction sites. Some children carefully stacked the wooden blocks to build structures, while others used the cones to mark roads and work zones for their vehicles.
Throughout the activity, the children demonstrated creativity, curiosity, and problem solving as they experimented with different ways to move materials, build towers, and create pathways. They shared materials, communicated with one another, and used imaginative play to bring their construction site to life. This hands-on experience supported fine motor development, early engineering concepts, spatial awareness, and cooperative play.
FLIGHT Curriculum Connections
- Play and Playfulness – The construction materials encouraged imaginative and creative play.
- Communication and Literacies – Children shared ideas, observed one another, and communicated during play.
- Diversity and Social Responsibility – Children practiced cooperation, sharing, and taking turns while building together.
Where to Next?
To build on this interest, we will introduce larger building materials such as cardboard boxes, ramps, bridges, and natural loose parts. The children will be encouraged to design their own construction sites, work together to solve building challenges, and continue exploring how different materials can be used to create new structures.
