What is sensory play? Any activity that stimulates someone’s sense of touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Most of the time you will see us using our sensory bins and tuff trays for fun sensory activities but they are not limited to these places! You can see sensory bags, sensory stations at the tables, sensory boards/pads around the room and even larger sensory stations placed throughout the classroom.
These activities are something that I would say our teachers have the most fun preparing, from planning based on a child’s interest to planning with a holiday twist, there are just never ending possibilities of resources that are able to be used. While these activities and stations are always fun they are actually providing children with the opportunity to explore and learn through hands on play that is engaging their senses while also allowing for them to make a little (sometimes a BIG) mess! 🙂 By providing sensory play we are encouraging and supporting many types of development, which in the end means they are absolutely worth all the mess!
