Starting kindergarten is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s early years. It is a time filled with excitement, new friendships, new routines, and new opportunities for learning. While children are often eager for this next adventure, many families naturally wonder, “Will my child be ready?” or “What can we do to help prepare them?”

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, we believe kindergarten readiness is a journey that begins long before the first day of school. It is built through everyday experiences, meaningful interactions, and opportunities for children to grow in confidence, independence, and curiosity.

To support our preschool families during this important transition, we recently hosted a Kindergarten Readiness Virtual Webinar, led by our experienced Preschool Registered Early Childhood Educators. The goal of this session was to provide families with information, guidance, and practical strategies to help children feel confident and prepared as they move from preschool into kindergarten.

Understanding the Transition from Preschool to Kindergarten

During our webinar, we discussed the many ways preschool and kindergarten environments differ. While both settings focus on children’s learning and development, kindergarten introduces new routines, expectations, and experiences that children begin preparing for throughout their preschool years.

Families learned about:

1. What a typical kindergarten day may look like.
2. The importance of following classroom routines and group expectations.
3. Building independence and confidence in everyday tasks.
4. Supporting social skills such as communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.
5. Ways families can continue building these skills at home.

Our educators shared that readiness is not about children knowing everything before they enter school. Instead, it is about helping children develop the confidence and skills they need to participate, explore, ask questions, and become capable learners.

How Tiny Hoppers Supports Kindergarten Readiness Every Day

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, kindergarten readiness is not something we focus on only at the end of the preschool yearit is woven into our program every single day.

Following a play-based approach, inspired by How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years, we understand that children learn best through relationships, exploration, and meaningful experiences. Our educators intentionally create opportunities for children to develop the skills they will carry with them into kindergarten and beyond.

Through our daily routines and activities, children are encouraged to develop independence by practicing skills such as:

1. Putting on and removing their own jackets and shoes.
2. Managing their personal belongings.
3. Cleaning up after activities.
4. Making choices and expressing their preferences.
5. Washing their hands and following hygiene routines.
6. Using the washroom independently.
7. Taking responsibility for simple classroom tasks.

These everyday moments help children build confidence and the belief that they are capable and successful.

Building Social, Emotional, and Learning Skills Through Play

Kindergarten readiness goes beyond academics. A child who feels confident, secure, and able to communicate their needs is better prepared to take on new challenges.

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, children develop important social and emotional skills through play and daily interactions. They learn how to:

1. Build friendships and cooperate with peers.
2. Take turns and share materials.
3. Solve problems with support.
4. Express their emotions and communicate their feelings.
5. Listen during group experiences.
6. Follow routines and classroom expectations.

Our educators also support early literacy, numeracy, creativity, and critical thinking through engaging experiences such as storytelling, art, sensory exploration, science activities, music, movement, and hands-on learning opportunities.

Every activity is designed with purposeto encourage curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning.

Preparing at Home: Small Steps Make a Big Difference

During our webinar, we reminded families that some of the most important preparation happens through simple everyday moments at home.

Children benefit when families provide opportunities to practice independence and responsibility. Some ways families can support kindergarten readiness include:

1. Allowing children time to complete tasks independently, even if it takes a little longer.
2. Encouraging them to dress themselves and manage their belongings.
3. Practicing potty training and helping children become comfortable with bathroom routines.
4. Encouraging children to communicate their needs and ask for help when needed.
5. Reading together daily and having conversations about stories.
6. Giving children small responsibilities, such as putting away toys or helping with simple household tasks.
7. Creating consistent routines to help children feel secure and prepared.

The goal is not perfectionit is progress. Children gain confidence when they are given the opportunity to try, make mistakes, problem-solve, and try again.

Our Kindergarten Readiness Checklist

As part of our webinar, we provided families with a Kindergarten Readiness Checklist to use as a helpful reference tool.

The checklist allows families to reflect on their child’s current skills, recognize areas where their child is thriving, and identify opportunities for continued growth. It is not meant to be a test or a list of expectations every child must master immediately. Instead, it is a guide to support conversations between families and educators and help ensure children receive the encouragement they need.

Every child develops at their own pace, and each child’s journey toward kindergarten readiness looks different.

Growing Together: A Partnership Between Families and Tiny Hoppers

Preparing children for kindergarten is a team effort. When families and educators work together, children feel supported, confident, and excited about the next step in their learning journey.

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, our goal is not only to prepare children for their first day of schoolwe want to help them become confident, independent, curious, and capable learners who are ready to embrace new experiences.

The foundation for kindergarten begins now, through the small moments we create every day: encouraging independence, providing opportunities to explore, supporting friendships, and giving children the time and space to grow.

Together, we are helping our little learners take their next big step with confidence!
