This past month we’ve focussed on gross motor activities in one of our preschool classrooms. We set up obstacle courses and various tossing activities. Today we actually set out the objects for an indoor version of soccer with baskets and inflatable balls.
By incorporating gross motor activities in to our curriculum plan this gives us opportunities to observe the children’s abilities within this domain. It also helps us tie the curriculum in with the learning foundation of health and wellness, since the children are after all being active and getting their body moving while doing these activities.
These activities also give the children a chance to develop their coordination, and learn the limitations of their bodies. In other words these activities help them learn how far they can jump, how high they can step, and how to throw balls.
Over all this type of play is great to incorporate into any child’s day.
