Learning, Creating, and Celebrating Together

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, we believe early childhood is a meaningful time to introduce children to the values of diversity, inclusion, respect, and community. During Black History Month in February, our classrooms took part in engaging activities that helped children explore culture, creativity, and appreciate the many contributions of Black individuals throughout history. Through art, sensory play, and collaborative classroom experiences, children learned in ways that were hands-on, developmentally appropriate, and most importantly, fun.

A Creative Door Decorating Challenge

One highlight of our Black History Month celebration was our classroom “Decorate Your Door” challenge.

Each classroom worked together to transform its door into a vibrant display celebrating Black history, culture, and creativity. Educators and children collaborated to brainstorm ideas, create decorations, and proudly display their artwork for the entire centre to see.

To make the challenge even more exciting, we shared photos of each classroom’s door on our Facebook page, where families had to vote for their favourite design. The enthusiasm from our Tiny Hoppers community was incredible, and we loved seeing families engage with the children’s hard work.

Congratulations to our Tiny Tots 2 classroom, who won the challenge! Their door stood out with creativity, teamwork, and beautiful artistic expression. We are so proud of the children and educators who worked together to bring their vision to life.

Exploring Through Sensory Play

Hands-on learning is a big part of how children explore the world at Tiny Hoppers. Throughout the month, our classrooms incorporated Black History Month–inspired sensory activities that encouraged curiosity and creativity.

Children explored different textures, colours, and materials through activities such as:

  • Sensory bins
  • Creative tactile play
  • Open-ended exploration activities

These experiences allowed children to learn through their senses while also building important developmental skills like fine motor coordination, problem-solving, and imaginative thinking.

Young Artists Inspired by Alma Thomas

Art is a wonderful way to introduce children to influential figures and creative expression. During our Black History Month activities, the children explored a mock version of the abstract art style of Alma Thomas, a celebrated African American artist known for her vibrant colors and mosaic-like paintings.

Inspired by her work, our young artists created their own colourful abstract masterpieces using bright patterns and shapes.

Each artwork was unique and reflected the children’s creativity, imagination, and joy in the process of making art. It was wonderful to see how proud they were of their creations.

Why Diversity and Inclusion Matter to Us

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, diversity and inclusion are not just themes for one month; they are values we embrace every day.

Our classrooms are spaces where children learn to:

  • Appreciate differences
  • Respect one another
  • Celebrate cultures and traditions
  • Feel proud of who they are

By introducing these concepts early in life, we help children grow into compassionate, respectful, and open-minded individuals.

Black History Month gave us a special opportunity to highlight important contributions, creativity, and cultural richness, while continuing conversations about respect and belonging.

At Tiny Hoppers Oshawa, we are proud to create an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated, and we always look forward to exploring cultures, creativity, and learning together throughout the year.
