Arctic Adventures: Preschool Pretend Play in Our Igloo

Our preschoolers have been busy exploring the Arctic through imaginative pretend play, using a beautifully set-up igloo space in our classroom. The igloo was created using light-coloured materials to represent ice blocks, with soft fabrics draped inside to create a cozy, enclosed environment. This inviting space immediately captured the children’s interest and curiosity.

Inside the igloo, children found soft bedding, Arctic-themed books, and props that encouraged quiet play, storytelling, and role play. The books sparked conversations about polar animals, cold climates, and how people live in the Arctic. Children eagerly pretended to be explorers, families keeping warm, and animals resting inside the igloo for shelter.

The igloo became a calm and engaging space where children could sit, lie down, read, and talk together. This supported early literacy skills as they looked through books and discussed pictures, as well as social development as they shared the space, took turns, and negotiated roles during play.

By providing a hands-on, immersive environment, the children were able to make meaningful connections and extend their understanding of the world in a developmentally appropriate way. Our Arctic igloo has become a much-loved space, supporting creativity, communication, and a sense of wonder through play.
