Happy Umbrella Day!
As the Spring weather approaches, so does an array of new and exciting ideas for our amazing educators to discover and create! Our awesome Preschool 1 team noticed all the rain lately, as their littles would bring in umbrellas everyday! They also noticed that the umbrellas would go home after drop off, or stay in cubbies most of the day, and we all know how much little ones love to show off their beautiful, fancy umbrellas! So our educators thought of the great idea of having an all Umbrella Day! This allowed the children to bring in their favorite umbrellas, and show them off to their friends! What started as just a small idea turned HUGE! The other learning activities that stemmed from this were endless fun! The educators hit all developmental milestones with this activity! They worked their gross motor skills and coordination skills as went for a walk, each holding their umbrellas, and gathered out front of the center to do an umbrella dance! They held their umbrellas high, and low, spinning them around, and dancing with them together! The fun didn’t stop there! The educators enhanced the learning in this activity by fostering their creative art skills by decorating their own paper umbrellas, which also doubles as a fine motor activity! They worked on their cognitive skills by sorting materials in the tuff tray and decorating the chalk umbrellas, and focused on literacy, sorting and matching as they used whiteboard markers to match the umbrellas to the rain boots based on their colors!
It gets better!
This activity was so special because it actually allowed our preschoolers to think for themselves, and encouraged them to come up with their own stem activity all on their own that they brought to their educators! The amazing preschoolers asked to do a show & tell of their umbrellas!! This gave each child a sense of belonging, community, and engagement as they proudly stood up in circle to show their friends their super cool umbrellas.
Ordinary every day objects can be so special and so exciting for children! If we give them the opportunity, they can thrive!
Happy Umbrella Day 2025!
