Multiculturalism at Summerside!

March 23, 2021

Multiculturalism is a big part of our program. We often invite parents to share special holidays or traditions that they celebrate in their family. Celebrating our differences teaches children it’s great to be different, and that differences make us beautiful. February was a very busy month showcasing many different celebrations.

Firstly, we celebrated Black History Month. The children learned about influential figures in the fight for equality. Some of these figures were Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr, and Jackie Robinson. They learned about inventors and their contributions to society, such as George Washington Carver, Mae Carol Jemison and Garrett Morgan. We had activities set out for the children to teach them about equality, dreaming and treating your friends fairly and with kindness, no matter how someone looks.

We also learned about Chinese New Year. The children were taught about the Dragon Dance and even participated in building one and dancing down the hallway of the centre for their friends to see. They learned about the traditions surrounding this holiday and what each of the animals mean and their significance.

We love teaching the children about various traditions and bringing them to life. It brings a sense of pride amongst the children and acceptance. We hope that we are helping this generation grow up to be their very best and make this world a better place.
