Bring the outdoors indoors with this literacy activity!

January 17, 2022

Snow and children are made for each other! You can use a child’s natural curiosity about snow as a gateway into so many different exploration experiences from Science, to art to language and literacy. Bringing snow inside makes for a great sensory activity that can be done in the warmth! Add some food colouring for even more fun!

In this activity, our toddlers are focusing on language and literacy by participating in a snowy sensory letter hunt! Our toddlers were given shovels and other digging utensils to dig through the snow and search for letters and numbers. When a child finds one, they verbally say the letter or number out loud. This activity allows a child to explore their own natural curiosity with the world around them, while learning important skills. This is a STEM activity as you can turn this one activity into so many more! Watching the snow melt can become a Science activity! Mixing food colouring and watching the colours mix and change is also a learning experience! Using different digging materials promotes hand eye coordination skills!
