February was pretty busy over here at Tiny hoppers Findlay Creek. We celebrated Chinese/Lunar New Year, we spent time learning about important Women and Men of colour for black history month, we talked about kindness and the importance of inclusion on Pink Shirt Day, and of course we made sure to spread the love on Valentine’s day.
For Chinese/Lunar new year each class did an amazing job ensuring they had a variety of activities prepared for the children to learn and be engaged. Our toddler classroom made adorable tiger masks, our preschool 1 classroom made dumplings to enjoy as an afternoon snack, and our preschool 2 classroom had a full week of fun activities( using chop sticks, doing a traditional dragon dance, making dumplings out of play dough)
For Black history month all 3 classroom made sure all of the children were able to participate and learn about important Women and Men of colour, while engaging in fun activities! Mae Jemison was the first black female to travel into space, the children made astronaut helmets, as well they had a space themed dramatic play area. The children enjoyed making their own traffic lights, after learning about Garrett Morgan. as well they had a blast training for their own boxing match inspired by Muhammad Ali. Those are just a few of the many activities that the children engaged in throughout black history month.
We got to have a somewhat normal Valentine’s day celebration at the centre this year, all of the children brought in cards, decorated kleenex boxes for their mail, and had some yummy Pink and heart shaped pancakes!
On February 23rd, we all sported our pink shirts, for pink shirt day to take a stand against bullying. We spoke with the children about how it is important to use gentle hands, and kind words.
Now that March has started, we are looking forward to a more normal spring, and for all of this snow to finally melt!
